The outboard is the first thing people notice
Cowlings take more direct sun than anything else on the boat and they chalk first. Cleaning, compounding, polishing, wax, and ceramic coating for outboards of every size.
The service
What outboard work covers
An outboard sits high, unshaded, and catches salt spray at speed all season. The paint on a cowling is generally less forgiving than gel coat, which is why a boat with a spotless hull can still look tired if the motor behind it has gone chalky and grey.
Worth doing at the same time
Outboard work pairs naturally with a topside or hull detail. It is the same setup and the same trip, so bundling it is nearly always the cheaper way to get it done.
Questions
Outboard FAQ
Why do outboard cowlings fade so badly?
They sit up high with nothing shading them, and they take direct sun all day plus salt spray at speed. The paint on a cowling is generally less forgiving than gel coat, so it chalks earlier and more visibly than the rest of the boat.
Can a chalky cowling be brought back?
Usually, yes. Compounding cuts through the oxidised layer, polishing restores the gloss, and then wax or a ceramic coating protects it. Badly faded cowlings can come back surprisingly well.
Do you clean the lower unit and jack plate too?
Yes. Cleaning covers the cowling, the mid section, the bracket or jack plate, and the lower unit, including salt and scum removal at the waterline. Any coating work is discussed separately since the areas below the waterline are treated differently.
